NSYSU sees biggest improvement in performance in QS Asia University Rankings 2022 among top domestic universities
687 universities, including 46 universities from Taiwan, featured in the latest QS Asia University Rankings 2022, published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). National Sun Yat-sen University ranked 68th, five places up from last year, which is the biggest improvement among domestic universities in the ranking. Among the top universities in Taiwan ranked within the Asian top 100, only NSYSU and National Chengchi University (ranked 90th), demonstrated a notable improvement in ranking performance.
In QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021, NSYSU remained one of the top 5 universities in Taiwan for the third year in a row, together with National Taiwan University, National Cheng Kung University, National Tsing Hua University, and National Chiao Tung University. NSYSU had a total of 17 subjects featured in the rankings, the University’s record high. The number of NSYSU’s subjects featured in the rankings has been growing every year since 2018, achieving a total of five new subjects featured over 4 years, which is the biggest improvement among domestic universities.
NSYSU President Ying-Yao Cheng emphasized that NSYSU’s performance in ranking indicators concerning internationalization in QS Asia University Rankings 2022 has been improving every year. He acknowledged students and faculty’s efforts and emphasized that internationalization has been the University’s development direction all along. Featuring in international rankings will improve the University’s international visibility and attract more outstanding international students to NSYSU. At present, the University offers 9 full English master and doctoral programs, and 3 full English undergraduate programs were introduced in 2021. Besides, NSYSU was selected as one of 4 key cultivation schools of the Program on Bilingual Education for Students in College (BEST) of the Ministry of Education. This September, NSYSU established the first Regional Resource Center for Bilingual Education in Taiwan, aiming to assist universities in southern Taiwan in improving teaching in English together with Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages.
Director of the Office of Institutional Research Shiao-Wei Kuo said that NSYSU has a rich academic research capacity: not only were its professors awarded Outstanding Research Awards and Ta-You Wu Memorial Awards of the Ministry of Science and Technology, but also, they published their research results in renowned international journals, and some were recognized as Highly Cited Researchers. Compared with other top universities, the scale of NSYSU is relatively small, however, we have outstanding performance in average citations and Field-Weighted Citation Impact per faculty member, among the top 5 domestically.
Director Shiao-Wei Kuo further pointed out that regarding the rankings in Taiwan, NSYSU is one of five best universities in Taiwan for several subjects: Petroleum Engineering (first in Taiwan), English Language & Literature (second in Taiwan), Economics and Econometrics (second in Taiwan), Agriculture & Forestry (third in Taiwan), Mathematics (fourth in Taiwan), Education and Training (fourth in Taiwan), Modern Languages (fourth in Taiwan). Also, NSYSU is the only Taiwanese university featured in the ranking for Petroleum Engineering.
Besides excellent academic performance, NSYSU values teaching innovation and encourages social responsibility practice. Also, NSYSU’s Program in Interdisciplinary Studies was nominated for 2021 THE Asia Award in the category of Teaching and Learning Strategy of the Year. Through interdisciplinary co-learning groups, teachers, students, communities and related organizations use creativity practice bases as a co-learning venue and break the strict boundaries of academic disciplines to cultivate talents with cross-disciplinary skills and problem-solving abilities.
