2021-12-01

NSYSU President Ying-Yao Cheng conferred the Honorary Doctorate in Management to the Chairman of Yageo Corporation Tie-Min Chen as a recognition of his outstanding achievements in corporate management, and contributions to international art, education in Taiwan, and social welfare. In the ceremony participated Mayor of Kaohsiung Chen Chi-Mai.

According to NSYSU, the founder and chairman of Yageo Corporation Tie-Min Chen is a world-renowned entrepreneur who, in more than 30 years, through regional and international mergers and acquisitions, expanded the business of Yageo Corporation to 25 countries worldwide, human resources to more than 40,000 employees and an annual turnover of US$ 4.5 billion, making it the world's leading manufacturer of electronic components. The merger of Yageo with Chilisin Electronics Corporation will be completed early next year, meaning that the group will become a flagship passive component manufacturer across electric resistors, capacitors, inductors, and magnetic components, which is uncommon in the world.

“Talents are the reason why Yageo Corporation flourishes!” When awarded the Honorary Doctorate, Chairman Tie-Min Chen said that his business strategy is to “expand globally while rooted in Taiwan”, that is to say, to “focus on Taiwan and expand worldwide”. He pointed out that by acquiring two US companies: Pulse Electronics in 2018 and KEMET in 2020, Yageo has been able to introduce high-end technologies from Europe and the U.S. required for future high-end automotive, industrial, medical, aerospace, and 5G/IoT development, and became the world's no. 1 passive component service provider for chip resistors and tantalum capacitors, and the world's no. 3 for laminated ceramic capacitors. In 2019, the company took the lead in responding to the government's action plan to attract Taiwanese companies overseas to invest in Taiwan and, in 2020, in investing in establishing a global R&D center in Kaohsiung and a high-end production base. The company will continue to expand production lines in Kaohsiung's Dashe, Nanzhi, and Dafa industrial parks and create job opportunities, and an international platform for talent development to make Yageo become a leading and globally competitive company in products, technology, talent, and sales.

NSYSU President Ying-Yao Cheng emphasized that Chairman Chen’s corporate development in Kaohsiung will bring a significant contribution to the future development of the Kaohsiung area, and that “he really spares no effort” in talent cultivation, in particular. President Cheng pointed out that NSYSU applied for the establishment of national research institutes in key fields, that is, to nurture talents through innovative industry-academia collaborations. As one of the seven partner companies participating in this talent cultivation program, for a long time Yageo has been providing resources, internship opportunities, advanced equipment, and instruments, which demonstrates the pro-active approach and importance that Yageo attaches to talent cultivation. In the future, NSYSU and Yageo will join hands to cultivate talents and create the future.

President Cheng also shared another, emotional side of Chairman Chen, who is the fourth top art collector in the world, actively engaged in promoting the development of the world’s culture and arts development, according to ARTnews. Besides sponsoring world-class art museums, he also promotes Chinese art and culture and exchanges between Eastern and Western art. Also, Yageo has been providing long-term financial aid to the victims of natural disasters and the disadvantaged in Taiwan. The University’s conferred Honorary Doctorate in Management is a recognition for this outstanding alumnus.

Mayor of Kaohsiung Chen Chi-Mai gave a speech saying that the story of how Chairman Tie-Min Chen became an entrepreneur is a legend in Kaohsiung. As a young man from southern Taiwan, he established himself in northern Taiwan and started his career from scratch and eventually became a leading global brand in the field of passive components and multi-layer ceramic capacitors. He also cares for the Taiwanese people: he purchased 4,000 boxes to help local farmers when Kaohsiung pineapples were selling poorly. Mayor Chen emphasized that the success of an entrepreneur is not to be measured by the wealth accumulated, but by their care for the local community and people. He expressed his sincerest wishes to Chairman Chen and congratulated him on receiving the Honorary Doctorate in Management in his hometown Kaohsiung. “The legend of Chairman Chen will go on,” he said.
