2021-12-02

Kaohsiung City Government has recently organized the Kaohsiung Ocean Party, putting on display the first smart self-driving boat in Taiwan. Mayor of Kaohsiung Chen Chih-Mai and the President of National Sun Yat-sen University Ying-Yao Cheng and other representatives of the industry, government, and academia signed an MOU on cooperation in shipbuilding and yacht industry and will use Kaohsiung as a demonstration base in the future to strengthen industrial visibility, train talents, narrow the gap between knowledge and application, and provide a friendly environment for industrial development.

Kaohsiung Ocean Party was held in Love River Bay by Kaohsiung Port. Vice Minister of the Ministry of Economic Affairs Chuan-Neng Lin, Administrative Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications Wen-Jong Chi, Deputy Minister of the Ocean Affairs Council Ching-Piao Tsai, and the Mayor of Kaohsiung Chen Chih-Mai arrived at the Party aboard Taiwan’s first smart self-driving boat to mark the new era of smart shipping.

According to the City Government, the smart self-driving boat displayed in Love River Bay this year, also called the “unmanned boat”, is the first boat in Taiwan driven with AI (artificial intelligence). Smart self-driving boats and cars usually have to go through various stages of inspection. The first one is the verification of the concept and the safety inspection after manufacturing. The current stage is the verification of the business model. In the future, Love River Bay, said to be an excellent location, the most complete and convenient will have 7 smart self-driving boats. In the future, it will be used for the development of services applying 5G AIoT (Artificial Intelligence Internet of Things) in Taiwan, especially smart shipping applications.

To continue promoting the development of the shipbuilding and yachting industries in Taiwan, foster the industry, promote talent cultivation, and advance scientific research, the City Government invited representatives of the industry, government, and academia: Administrative Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications Wen-Jong Chi, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Economic Affairs Chuan-Neng Lin, President of NSYSU Ying-Yao Cheng, Deputy Minister of the Ocean Affairs Council Ching-Piao Tsai, President of Jong Shyn Shipbuilding Company Pi-Hsiang Han, and Chairman of Taiwan Yacht Industry Association Howard Gung to sign an MOU with the Government on cooperation in the shipbuilding and yachting industry.

The cooperation involves such topics as strengthening the visibility of the industry; future provision of resources to the industry by the central and local government, industry, and academia to organize various international boating events, exhibitions, forums, and exchanges; promotion of talent cultivation by establishing cooperation in education and employment matching platforms, and conducting technical seminars and lectures by industry professionals for maritime talents; creating a friendly environment for industrial development through cross-regional industry cooperation, and promoting knowledge of the ocean.

According to Kaohsiung City Government, with the MOU signed, the Asia New Bay Area will concentrate the yachting and shipbuilding industry and 5G AIoT smart shipping-related applications. This will not only greatly improve the industry, life, leisure, and the overall environment, but also let more people see how interesting and closely related to life the development of the application of new technology can be, and more importantly, attract the workforce.

Kaohsiung City Government pointed out that in addition to being a marine leisure hotspot, Kaohsiung is also a major hub of the yacht and shipbuilding industry. In 2021, Taiwan ranked fourth in the world for the total length of large yachts over 24 meters long (80 feet) ordered; over half of Taiwan’s yacht manufacturers are located in Kaohsiung, and the output value accounts for Taiwan’s 80%. These statistics undoubtedly prove the yacht building industry to be one of the important industries in Kaohsiung.
