NSYSU Ranks Top 5 by Global Views Monthly

The Global Views Monthly magazine recently announced a domestic ranking, and National Sun Yat-sen University was ranked as the 5th top university in Taiwan. Being the youngest on the list, why did NSYSU stand out? President Ying-Yao Cheng pointed out two factors that have driven NSYSU to excellence: "internationalization" and "exclusivity."

While most universities' internationalization approach is setting up international colleges and recruiting overseas students, NSYSU focuses on recruiting international faculty to internationalize its campus. Each college has the latitude to hire an additional 10% international faculty, increasing the number of English-taught courses and adding multicultural perspectives to campus. Students have the choice not just to receive education in their chosen majors; they can choose to receive an education in English. The result is two folds: developing the language skills of local students to become bilingual and building a friendly learning environment for international students.

This plan has to start early for the students to gain a solid bilingual ability. Therefore, in AY2021, NSYSU launched an initiative to transform particular undergraduate programs into an all-English curriculum. Students admitted to the all-English programs take the entire coursework in English. The new initiative received unexpected positive results: students enrolled in the English programs have higher entry scores and expressed higher satisfaction from teaching survey feedback. The first group of English programs under the initiative included electrical engineering, mechanical and electro-mechanical engineering, and chemistry. New programs to be added in AY2022 are physics, applied mathematics, marine resources, and international business, and in AY2023, materials and optoelectronic science, photonics, biological sciences, computer science, and engineering.

It is not an easy task for a young university to compete against well-established top universities. However, NSYSU has been striving to develop exclusiveness: with location and create niches between faculty specialties and industries.

NSYSU's seaside location contributes to the natural development of research in marine sciences and is a privilege for the university. For example, NSYSU built the country's first crewed underwater research vehicle through cross-disciplinary technological collaboration, enabling various ocean research and activity application breakthroughs. In the semiconductor field, NSYSU's Center of Crystal Research is the only research center in Taiwan capable of producing the next-generation compound semiconductor material "silicon carbide SiC." On the business side, the College of Management pioneered in offering international student mobility years ago, gaining AACSB accreditation and establishing southern Taiwan's first EMBA program. It is also the only management program in Taiwan to be ranked in the world's top 100 management schools by Financial Times for six consecutive years.

The past year has been fruitful. The government endowed critical higher education establishments at NSYSU, namely establishing the new colleges in international finance, semiconductor, and post-baccalaureate medicine and for the university to develop into a bilingual university. The new establishments will definitely add strengths to the university and elevate the university to a new level.
