2022-10-11

(Provided by the Teaching and Learning Development and Resources Center) The “2022 New Foreign Faculty Orientation” was held on September 3 by the Teaching and Learning Development and Resources Center (TLDR) of the Academic Affairs Office. To help new faculty members adapt to NSYSU campus more efficiently, senior professors gave lectures on various topics with the purposes of enhancing their teaching proficiency, enriching their facility for research, and fostering the comprehension of NSYSU.

The first lecture among the three of different themes “Ethical Issues in Academic Research and Teaching” was presented by Dr. Haga, Kai-yin Allison, Assistant Professor from the International Master Program in Asia-Pacific Affairs. Taking international news reports on academic integrity as examples, she addressed the issues of academic integrity that require special attention when doing research. In addition to research literacy, researchers also need to develop the cognizance of research ethics. The ambiguous areas of citation in publication should not be overlooked perfunctorily, said Dr. Haga. She also arranged a session for interaction with participants after the speech, urging them to be careful when doing research and writing papers.

Dr. Yu-feng Yang, Associate Professor from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, with “My Journey as a Teacher” being the title of her talk, illustrates her understanding of education with agriculture and industry metaphors respectively. Taking the relationship between teaching and gardening as an example, she also shared how teachers should provide students with proper conditions for learning. She believes that Exploring, Sensing and Connecting, Desire to learn, and Creative and Critical Thinking are the conditions that need to be considered for students to learn effectively and engage in class.

Sharing “Teaching in Taiwan,” Professor Chieh-sen Huang from the Department of Applied Mathematics introduced the characteristics of NSYSU's students to new teachers and explained a teacher’s role in Taiwanese classrooms. Then, he shared his teaching experiences and gave comprehensive suggestions to present teachers in regard to orientation of the role as teacher, mindsets for teaching, benefits for students in taking EMI courses, effective English-mediated instruction, writing syllabus, rules of class, and lesson design.

Po-Chiao Lin, Vice President for Academic Affairs, also stated that NSYSU is committed in creating a bilingual campus and teaching environment, and will continue to expedite its internationalization. Over the years, NSYSU has continuously recruited teachers from all over the world. Introducing foreign teachers will equip students with global perspective more effectively, and for the university, foreign teachers can facilitate NSYSU’s development into an international university.

Vice President Lin mentioned that teachers were all proficient in their discipline knowledge, and by providing these knowledges in classrooms, students' English communication skills and international mobility would extensively improve. What’s more, he hoped that the investment in teaching and learning resources for English Medium Instruction will recruit more excellent international talented teachers to join NSYSU, accomplishing it as a paragon of the Ministry of Education's key cultivation schools in bilingual education.

The ten new foreign faculty members who participated in this orientation have all been to different countries, holding rich experiences and professional academic backgrounds. They are Grundmann, Joern Peter, Assistant Professor from the Department of Chinese, Phuong Viet Pham, Assistant Professor from the Department of Physics, Martin Fikacek, Assistant Professor from the Department of Biological Sciences, Rafael David Kaliski, Assistant Professor from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Hafiz Furqan Ahmed, Assistant Professor from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Chai Wai Siong, Assistant Professor from the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Pierre-Alexandre Château, Assistant Professor from the Department of Marine Engineering, Sang-Jin Kim, Assistant Professor from the Department of Marine Engineering, Asim Onder, Assistant Professor from the Department of Marine Engineering, Dale Albanese, Assistant Professor from the International Graduate Program of Education and Human Development.
