National Sun Yat-sen University participated 2023 Kaohsiung Smart City Summit & Expo to fortify green energy transitions

2023-10-10

(Provided by Office of Global Industry-Academe Collaboration and Advancement) National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) research teams demonstrated their prominent results in research fields such as hydrogen energy, carbon neutrality, and waste reuse at the 2023 Kaohsiung Smart City Summit & Expo hosted in Kaohsiung Exhibition Center. The subjects of climate change and the Net-Zero transition have been prevalent around the world continuously. NSYSU has contributed much effort aiming at enabling energy transitions. The NSYSU research faculties and teams, including Professor Chun-Hu Chen, the Director of the Green Hydrogen Research Center, Dr. Ken-Lin Chang, the Associate Professor of the Institute of Environmental Engineering, Dr. Shu Chen Hsieh, the Distinguished Professor of the Department of Chemistry, and Macro Wisdom System Integration Technology Limited Company, the NSYSU student entrepreneurship company, participated the expo and demonstrated their technical innovations. In addition, the teams conducted conversations with industrial representatives to strengthen the linkage between technical innovations and industrial demands.

The Director of the Green Hydrogen Research Center and the Professor of the Department of Chemistry at NSYSU, Chun-Hu Chen emphasized that the center provides the integration of the upstream and downstream supply chain services exclusively for industries to promote green hydrogen effectively and to achieve the goal of negative carbon emissions that could be the solution to carbon anxiety. Aimed at issues such as insufficient penetration of green hydrogen and carbon reduction and high costs, the center provides accomplished techniques of large-scale green hydrogen manufacturing and fine chemicals converted by recycled CO2. The techniques were developed aiming at incorporating techniques in the industrial business chain, providing cutting-edge products, cooperating with industrial and government sectors, and planning for carbon footprint verification and carbon neutrality. Ken-Lin Chang, an Associate Professor at the Institute of Environmental Engineering, mentioned that CO2 can be converted to fine chemicals and fuels with economic value added to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. The plasma system developed by the NSYSU teams can process 15% high-concentration CO2; the conversion rate is approximately 11%, and the CO yield is 10%. Besides, the teams successfully developed a green biphasic reaction system, which converts agricultural waste to high-value chemicals. The innovation provides more alternatives to utilize biomass materials and complies with the current energy policies.

Shu Chen Hsieh, the Distinguished Professor of NSYSU’s NanoForce Laboratory, indicated that rice is a main crop in Taiwan. There are approximately 360,000 tons of rice husk waste produced every year. The research team contributed much effort to incorporate waste husks as materials of supercapacitors to help develop regional green energy industries. Yi-Rong Yang, the Chief Operation Officer of Macro Wisdom System Integration Technology Limited Company, the NSYSU student entrepreneurship company, stated that industry-academe ESG collaboration can be implemented through smart manufacturing technical services and ESG carbon calculation methodology. The techniques provided by Macro Wisdom System Integration Technology Limited Company will meet the demands of small and medium enterprises and factories, generally improve smart manufacturing quality, and assist with net-zero carbon emissions.

Ying-Yao Cheng, the President of NSYSU, said that in recent years, NSYSU has been committed to linking industry and academia. It is also the social responsibility of a university to provide an environment for sustainable development while enhancing corporate competition. It is hoped that with joint efforts, NSYSU can play its part in solving the problems brought about by climate change. The Office of Global Industry-Academe Collaboration and Advancement (OGIACA) at NSYSU indicated that initiating the Green Transitions in Kaohsiung is one of NSYSU’s key projects in these years. NSYSU will keep going with technical development support for faculties, matchmaking industry-academe collaborations, and technology transfer, integrating industry-academe resources. The regional sustainable green energy transitions require more innovative technology, materials, and services, and NSYSU will continuously play a pivotal role through research result demonstrations and conversations.
