NSYSU launched the Center for Carbon Research and Solutions as a pioneering green economy think tank in Taiwan

The Taiwan Carbon Solution Exchange (TCX) was officially launched in Kaohsiung in August 2023, signifying Taiwan’s entry into the worldwide carbon emission trading market. To integrate the resources of systematic research of net zero carbon emission-related investment and innovative techniques, assist with international regulatory cooperation, and provide training and consulting services, National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) has established the Center for Carbon Research and Solutions (CCRS). In addition to conducting varied research regarding carbon emission issues and assisting with regulation establishments, the center attempts to gather significant and urgent requirements of Taiwan industries and offer feasible solutions.

The CCRS at NSYSU is sponsored by the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) and its related institutions, including the Taipei Exchange, Taiwan Futures Exchange (TAIFEX), and Taiwan Depository & Clearing Corporation (TDCC). The center aims to develop net zero circular economy-related techniques and networks, assisting with the implementation by public sectors and industries. Based on the fundamental concept of a “Sustainable Environment,” the center will integrate varied resources from academic institutions, government, and local industries. The center will also conduct academic cooperation, such as training courses and forums, to motivate more insightful discussions regarding the circular economy, greenhouse gas, water footprint, carbon footprint, energy management system, and carbon neutrality. In addition, the center cooperates from time to time with relevant special exhibitions, teaching, lectures, seminars, and community activities, focusing on domestic and foreign professionals in related fields to inaugurate pioneering research, practical techniques, and application development. To reduce industrial pollution and have industries transformed into green industries that produce zero pollution or low pollution, it is necessary to undertake thorough fundamental research on circular economy technology.

Ying-Yao Cheng, President of NSYSU, pointed out that the concept of sustainable development that maintains balance under economic growth, social development, and environmental protection has promoted the core issue of global Environmental Social Governance (ESG) today. The prevailing ESG trends have motivated people to implement net zero carbon emissions for climate change. Net zero carbon emissions are a pivotal factor in global industrial development for the next generation. Financial experts are looking into related investment opportunities and green financing development. Professionals in the technology industries attempt to develop various carbon reduction and negative carbon techniques. The trend has also defined Taiwan’s potential economic mission. “Currently, there is no integrated action plan for the ESG topic that covers various fields in Taiwan. Thus, NSYSU will take action to provide analytic solutions to ESG plans, green financing, and the development of a carbon emissions trading market in Taiwan,” said Ying-Yao Cheng.

Dr. Hung-Jeng Tsai, the Director of the CCRS, indicated that the consulting services and courses aimed at providing timely and feasible solutions to industries, such as additional costs resulting from the global carbon credit regulations. The training offered by the center will deliver the operational definition and practical procedures for corporations that undergo the issues of carbon footprint verification, carbon credit, and emission trading. The CCRS will also conduct systematic research on net zero-related investments, innovative techniques, and international regulatory cooperation to analyze policies regarding ESG, green financing, and the establishment of a carbon emission trade market. Furthermore, the center will assist the government and industries in promoting the concepts and technologies of carbon verification and carbon credit management and train relevant talents. The overarching objective is to establish a nationwide carbon reduction technical chain, industry clusters, ecological system, and competitive advantages of a low carbon economy in Taiwan, eventually accomplishing the goal of 2050 Net-Zero Emissions.
