Kin-Lu Wong at NSYSU was awarded the honorary life-time National Chair Professor of the MOE for leading global mobile communications

2024-01-23

Kin-Lu Wong, an Outstanding Chair Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering at National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), is a leader in the field of antenna research in Taiwan. In 2023, the Ministry of Education (MOE) awarded him the honorary life-time National Chair Professor for his outstanding contributions to mobile communication antenna research, terminal multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system development, and antenna talent cultivation. The new generation MIMO antenna system technology developed by Kin-Lu Wong is a domestic research pioneer and a prominent international leader in mobile communication antenna research.

Kin-Lu Wong has studied planar antenna theory and application design since 1990 and has researched for over 33 years. Kin-Lu Wong's academic research performance was ranked 99th among the world's best 1,000 scientists in the Electronics and Electrical Engineering arena by the Research.com academic website in 2022 and 1st in Taiwan. His articles have been cited over 36,000 times, with an H-index of 88 in Google Scholar. He has published over 900 journal and conference papers, granted more than 300 patents in Taiwan, the United States, Europe, China, Japan, and South Korea, and has profound international influence.

Professor Kin-Lu Wong has won numerous awards. After receiving the 20th National Chair Professor from the MOE in 2016, he received the 27th National Chair Professor from the MOE in 2023 again, becoming an honorary life-time National Chair Professor by the MOE. He has also won the Academic Outstanding Research Award from the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), an Academic Award from the MOE, an Outstanding Research Award from the Pan Wen Yuan Foundation, an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Fellow, Thomson-Reuters Highly Cited Researcher, Elsevier Highly Cited Researcher, and NSYSU Outstanding Chair Professor. His research result, "Handheld Wireless Communication Device Antennas Design," was selected for the 50th Anniversary of the NSTC (1959-2009) - Science 50, which is one of Taiwan's top 50 critical scientific achievements in half a century, and was selected as "Global Views Monthly" Magazine "top 100 honor of Taiwan - academic and invention category".

Kin-Lu Wong has spared no effort in the research and development of mobile communication antennas. He leads the research team to invent patents and intellectual property technology transfer, form research alliances with industry, organize important international academic conferences, enhance Taiwan's visibility and influence in the field of international antenna research, co-organize national communication antenna competitions, cultivate communication antenna talents, and promote international and cross-strait academic research cooperation.

Kin-Lu Wong said that the technological development of fifth-generation mobile communications (5G) and future (B5G/6G) communication systems is critical to national science and technology development. However, it is not easy to implement high-isolation MIMO antenna systems in the very limited space of smartphones, and adapting to the user's hand-holding conditions also remains a challenge. If a high-performance MIMO antenna system can be configured in the terminal, it will effectively increase the 5G and future B5G/6G terminal user-experienced data rate. He is committed to the development of 6G upper-midband higher-order MIMO antenna systems and their system performance verification to increase terminal spectral efficiency and throughput significantly, provide new 6G spectrum applications in the future, and meet the needs of high-speed and wide-coverage mobile communications.
