USR in Pingtung remote areas: The Maxwell Volunteer Medical Team joins forces with School of Medicine faculty and students in medical outreach

2024-12-10

Due to limited healthcare resources in remote and offshore areas, good health education is essential to improving community health. This year, the Maxwell Volunteer Medical Team from the College of Medicine at National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), along with School of Medicine faculty and students, returned to Manjhou Township in Pingtung. Under the guidance of Pingtung County Government Public Health Bureau Director Hsiu-Chun Chang, they carried out a week-long University Social Responsibility (USR) service, collaborating with Public Health Centers, service points, and schools to actively spread medical knowledge, raise health awareness among remote residents, and enhance students' understanding and engagement in social responsibility.

The Volunteer Team, led by former Dean of the College of Medicine, Ming-Lung Yu, and Senior Vice President and former Chair of the School of Medicine, Yen-Hsu Chen, conducted a systematic health education program focused on increasing residents' health awareness and disease prevention. The program covered common disease prevention, medication safety, proper hygiene practices, and health management. The team also partnered with Manjhou Elementary School to create fun and educational activities on vision and oral health, enlightening young children's interest in health education in remote areas.

With support from Manjhou Township Public Health Center and Heng Chun Christian Hospital, the faculty and students engaged with local residents, using the medical knowledge and resources learned in class to help residents better understand health issues by interacting with them. In addition to health education lectures and awareness activities, the team also conducted home visits to understand the daily lives and living environments of the residents, reflecting on their daily care needs to improve health standards and quality of life.

NSYSU School of Medicine student Cheng-Nan Lai shared that, during the summer days in Manjhou, smiles and sincerity were the best tools for building relationships with residents. He noted, "This experience taught me that what makes rural areas 'remote' is not distance, but our hearts." School of Medicine student Min-Liang Chang said, "This event gave us the opportunity to apply basic medical knowledge learned in class to remote healthcare, deepening our understanding of the scarcity and importance of medical resources in these areas. In the future, I hope to be like a seed nourishing and improving the medical care in rural areas.

The Maxwell Volunteer Medical Team focuses on integrating remote care and health education, enhancing the impact of health education by initiating disease prevention and health screening services. Moving forward, they aim to continue empowering towns in southern Pingtung, improving local residents' health and developing School of Medicine students' sense of social responsibility and commitment to become local physicians in the future.
