"Highly Cited Researchers" among 1 in 1,000: NSYSU's Shin-Ming Huang and Chao-Kai Wen honored

2024-12-24

Clarivate Analytics, a global provider of data analysis services, has released the "Highly Cited Researchers 2024" list, recognizing the top 1 in 1,000 scholars worldwide. This year, 12 researchers from Taiwan have been included, with three from National Taiwan University, two each from National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) and National Cheng Kung University, and one from other institutions. NSYSU's Associate Professor Shin-Ming Huang from the Department of Physics has been recognized for six consecutive years since 2019, while Professor Chao-Kai Wen from the Institute of Communications Engineering has made the list for the second time, demonstrating outstanding academic research performance.

The "Highly Cited Researchers" list is compiled annually by the Clarivate's Institute for Scientific Information, based on data from the highly respected Web of Science citation database. It evaluates citation data from highly cited papers in SCIE- and SSCI-indexed journals, highlighting researchers who have made significant and wide-reaching influence to global scientific research. The 2024 list features 6,636 researchers worldwide, with an average selection rate of one scholar per 1,000. Competition is fierce, with only 12 scholars from Taiwan included this year.

Associate Professor Shin-Ming Huang from the Department of Physics at NSYSU specializes in condensed matter physics, superconductivity, and topology physics. His groundbreaking research encompasses simulations of topological materials to investigate their symmetries and novel electronic properties, using machine learning for classifying quantum many-body systems, studying the magnetic chiral crystals, as well as exploring the superconductivity, magnetism, and quantum geometry. Huang's work has gained international acclaim, with papers published in prestigious journals such as Nature (2020), Science (2019), and Nature Materials (2018). A consistent honoree on the Highly Cited Researchers list since 2019, Huang credits his achievements to the profound insights provided by quantum physics. "Quantum physics is no longer just about Schrödinger's cat," Huang remarked. "Its underlying abstract geometry and topological structure reveal unique observations, hinting at new possibilities for precision applications and product development."

Professor Chao-Kai Wen of the Institute of Communications Engineering at NSYSU, formerly the Director of the Institute and Associate Dean of the College of Engineering, specializes in wireless communications, particularly in multi-antenna systems. Beyond theoretical advancements, he actively translates his research into practical applications through industry-academia collaborations and technology transfers. In 2018, Professor Wen introduced the concept of the "Wireless Channel Feedback Autoencoder," which has driven global research and influenced the development of 6G standards by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). His contributions earned him recognition as a Highly Cited Researcher in 2022 and the prestigious honor of IEEE Fellow in 2024 for advancing deep learning in wireless systems. Reflecting on his repeated recognition as a Highly Cited Researcher, Wen expressed gratitude for NSYSU's steadfast support of his research endeavors.

Clarivate states that only papers ranked in the top 1% of citations within the Web of Science database across 21 academic fields qualify as "Highly Cited Papers." The Highly Cited Researchers 2024 list was compiled based on the number of Highly Cited Papers published during the 11 years from 2013 to 2023. Among the 12 honorees from Taiwan, institutions beyond those three previously mentioned include National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, National Tsing Hua University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, China Medical University, and Academia Sinica, each represented by one researcher.
