Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) announced the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025. National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) has 20 subjects ranked, placing it among the top five in Taiwan, following National Taiwan University (NTU), National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU). Compared to last year, NSYSU has seen a significant increase in the number of ranked subjects, with five new entries, including Modern Languages, Medicine, Environmental Sciences, Politics & International Studies, and Sociology.
NSYSU President Chih-Peng Li noted that the university delivered an outstanding performance this year, demonstrating its balanced development in both science & engineering and humanities & social sciences. Subjects from all five broad areas were ranked in the list. In the science and engineering fields, multiple subjects maintained their presence in the rankings, with improved positions in Computer Science & Information Systems, Engineering – Chemical, Engineering - Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing, and Chemistry, along with the addition of Environmental Sciences to the global rankings.
In the humanities and social sciences, NSYSU saw improvements in rankings for subjects such as English Language & Literature and Economics & Econometrics, and welcomed new entries including Modern Languages, Politics & International Studies, and Sociology. This highlights NSYSU's balanced and continuous development across diverse academic fields. Furthermore, the university's College of Medicine, officially established in 2022, marks a significant milestone in advancing medical education and research. The inclusion of Medicine in the global rankings affirms NSYSU's academic strength in the medical field, drawing significant attention to its future potential and signaling a new momentum for healthcare development in southern Taiwan. NSYSU continues to embrace the visions of being "Artistic & Inclusive, Advanced & Innovative" (AI)2, striving to be a comprehensive university with humanities and sciences & technologies in balance.
Che-Hsin Lee, Director of the Office of Institutional Research at NSYSU, stated that this year, 1,747 universities worldwide had at least one subject ranked, with 27 universities from Taiwan making the list. In terms of broad subject area rankings, NSYSU ranked within the global Top 550 in "Social Sciences & Management," "Natural Sciences," "Arts & Humanities," and "Engineering & Technology." Specifically, "Social Sciences & Management" ranked between 401–450 globally and sixth in Taiwan. In terms of individual subject rankings, NSYSU ranked in the national top five in the following areas: Economics & Econometrics (2nd), English Language & Literature (3rd), Agriculture & Forestry (3rd), Politics & International Studies (3rd), Mathematics (5th), Accounting & Finance (5th), and Business & Management Studies (5th). Other ranked subjects include Modern Languages, Computer Science & Information Systems, Engineering – Chemical, Engineering - Electrical & Electronic, Engineering - Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing, Biological Sciences, Medicine, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Materials Sciences, Physics & Astronomy, Education, and Sociology.
The QS World University Rankings by Subject are evaluated annually across five broad subject areas and their respective subjects. The assessment indicators include academic and employer reputation, research citations and impact, and in some subjects, the International Research Network (IRN) Index.
