Showcasing Taiwan Through Numbers: NSYSU Hosts the 2025 International Linear Algebra Society Annual Conference

2025-06-23
(Provided by Department of Applied Mathematics) National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) hosted the "26th Conference of the International Linear Algebra Society (ILAS 2025)" from June 23 to June 27. Themed "Legacy and New Spectrum," the conference symbolizes Taiwan's readiness to write future chapters together with the world. The international conference featured 10 plenary talks and 35 mini-symposia, and attracted nearly 400 international scholars from more than 40 countries to visit NSYSU, making Kaohsiung and Taiwan the platform for international academic exchange.
The Conference of the International Linear Algebra Society (ILAS) has been held twice every three years since 1989, with several Taiwanese scholars invited to deliver speeches at the conference. Through the efforts of Jephian C.-H. Lin, Matthew M. Lin, and other mathematicians, the conference was set to be held in Kaohsiung, marking the third time in over thirty years that an ILAS conference has been held in the Asia-Pacific area. By attracting international scholars to actively come to Taiwan, this conference effectively showcased Taiwan's research capabilities to the international community, thus greatly increasing the opportunities for international collaboration.
NSYSU President Chih-Peng Li welcomed the gathered mathematicians and thanked the International Linear Algebra Society for choosing Kaohsiung as the venue for this exchange. President Li also expressed hope that participants would gain inspiration while experiencing the warm culture of southern Taiwan. Daniel B. Szyld, President of the International Linear Algebra Society, praised NSYSU's hospitality and emphasized that linear algebra, as a foundational mathematical discipline, will support revolutionary developments in computational science, discrete mathematics, machine learning, and other fields.
The conference featured pioneering mathematicians specializing in scientific computing, spectral graph theory, operator theory, data science, quantum computing, and other fields. One of the speakers was Fan Chung, Honorary Chair Professor of the Department of Applied Mathematics, NSYSU. Fan Chung gave a talk titled "Linear algebra methods for Boolean functions," in which she explored a number of analytic and combinatorial properties of Boolean functions through quasi-random graphs. The conference also awarded the Hans Schneider Prize, the holy grail in the field of linear algebra, to this year's recipient, Dario Bini, recognizing his contributions to matrix multiplication, polynomials and structured matrices, Markov chains, and other areas of computational linear algebra.
The 26th Conference of the International Linear Algebra Society was jointly organized by National Sun Yat-sen University, the International Linear Algebra Society, and the Mathematical Society of the Republic of China. The event received funding from the National Science and Technology Council and the Economic Development Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government, and attracted participation from important academic organizations, including the Taiwan Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the National Center for Theoretical Sciences, and the Natural Science and Sustainable Research Promotion and Engagement Center. Through this international conference, Taiwan showcased its research highlights while NSYSU strengthened the connection with the international academic community, creating new opportunities for advancing mathematics and related research fields in Taiwan.
