Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) announced the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) has 16 subjects ranked this year, placing it among the top five in Taiwan, following National Taiwan University (NTU), National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU). Among them, NSYSU's Petroleum Engineering ranked within the top 100 worldwide, first in Taiwan.
NSYSU President Chih-Peng Li noted that the university achieved rankings across all five broad subject areas, demonstrating its strength as a comprehensive research university with balanced development. Among these achievements, Petroleum Engineering's placement in the global top 100 stands out particularly. Over the past decade, NSYSU researchers have published nearly 5,000 academic papers in petroleum engineering and related engineering fields, reflecting sustained research momentum and a clear trend toward interdisciplinary development. Research topics span petrochemical monomers, polymer materials, and net-zero carbon emissions technologies, and extend into cutting-edge applications such as semiconductor devices and 6G communications, underscoring the close alignment between NSYSU's academic development and global industrial trends.
In terms of research quality and international visibility, many of NSYSU's research achievements have gained strong representation in major international academic databases, highlighting the university's solid global academic influence in related fields. Furthermore, through the continuous efforts of its net-zero carbon emissions and energy research teams, NSYSU has strengthened the connection between academic research and industrial demand while actively addressing critical challenges related to net-zero transition and sustainable development.
According to NSYSU, a total of 6,277 universities worldwide participated in this year's evaluation, while 30 universities from Taiwan had subjects ranked. Across the five broad subject areas, NSYSU ranked within the global top 550 in "Arts & Humanities," "Engineering & Technology," "Natural Sciences," and "Social Sciences & Management." Specifically, "Social Sciences & Management" ranked 388th globally and sixth in Taiwan. Among universities in Taiwan, NSYSU subjects ranked among the top five nationally include Petroleum Engineering (1st), Sociology (2nd), English Language & Literature (3rd), Politics & International Studies (3rd), Economics & Econometrics (5th), Business & Management Studies (5th), and Mathematics (5th).
The 16 NSYSU subjects ranked in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 include English Language & Literature, Modern Languages, Computer Science & Information Systems, Engineering - Electrical & Electronic, Engineering - Mechanical, Petroleum Engineering, Biological Sciences, Medicine, Chemistry, Materials Sciences, Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy, Business & Management Studies, Economics & Econometrics, Politics & International Studies, and Sociology. The QS World University Rankings by Subject are evaluated annually across five broad subject areas and their respective subjects. The assessment indicators include academic and employer reputation, research citations and impact, and in some subjects, the International Research Network (IRN) Index.
