3 NSYSU young scholars, Zi-Xian Liao, Hsu-Sheng Hsieh, and Ching-Wen Luo, received the Ta-You Wu Memorial Awards

The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) announced the 2023 Ta-You Wu Memorial Award Recipients. Three young scholars at National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), Professor Zi-Xian Liao of the Institute of Medical Science and Technology, Associate Professor Hsu-Sheng Hsieh of the Institute of Public Affairs Management, and Associate Professor Ching-Wen Luo of the Department of Chinese Literature were awarded for the outstanding performance in their professional fields. The young scholars at NSYSU who have won awards for the past years have significantly bolstered the campus' academic research capacity. All faculty and students rejoice in this honor.
The research team of Professor Zi-Xian Liao of the Institute of Medical Science and Technology combines biotechnology, nanomaterial science, and viral systems to develop nanotechnology-modified immunotherapy, improved viral delivery systems, photodynamic therapy, and tumor microenvironment-controlled nanoparticles for clinical cancer and tumor treatment, and the research results were published in international journals. The technology related to virus-modified research has obtained patents in Taiwan, Japan, and China. This nanomodified virus technology can be widely used in various clinical genetic-related diseases to prolong or improve the efficacy of drugs and treatments, improve the feasibility of the clinical application of the virus, and accelerate the advancement of clinical use in the treatment of cancer and tumors in the future.
Associate Professor Hsu-Sheng Hsieh of the Institute of Public Affairs Management uses an innovative perspective on urban transportation research, introducing theories from psychology and sociology to explore how to guide the development of sustainable and human-centered transportation in Taiwan. His research includes designing psychological and behavioral strategies to increase the acceptability of traffic congestion taxes, changing transportation habits, and conducting social experiments to evaluate the effectiveness. In addition, he is concerned about the transportation disadvantage issues that have worsened during the COVID-19 epidemic and studied solutions by sustainable transportation integration strategies. He will devote himself to researching how Taiwan's transportation responds to environmental sustainability and social inclusion in the future.
Associate Professor Ching-Wen Luo of the Department of Chinese Literature specializes in Ming and Qing classical novels, folk literature, and Chinese literature in Vietnam. He pays attention to various heterogeneous messages in narrative literature, phenomena that are very different from the mainstream or the subject and are concealed, and their interactions with social and cultural phenomena. In recent years, he observed the exchanges and reflections among people of different nationalities, communities, and statuses. He has also explored the collective cognition, group memory, and mass mentality implicit in them, or the transfer, change, reconfiguration, and rebirth of certain concepts, or convergence of various values in a specific historical time and space, social structure, and cultural context aim to uncover the diverse aspects and profound implications of Taiwan folk literature, belief culture, and modern Vietnamese Chinese literary works.
To commemorate Dr. Ta-You Wu's contribution to the development of science and technology research and to reward Taiwan's academic elites for engaging in long-term academic research, the NSTC established an award in his name to encourage young scholars in 2002. The Ta-You Wu Memorial Award is awarded annually by the conveners of various disciplines of the NSTC to nominate young scholars under the age of 42 who have outstanding academic achievements. In 2023, a total of 45 scholars received this prestigious award.
