National Sun Yat-sen University and Japan’s Largest Scientific Instrument Manufacturer Team Up to Advance Emergency Medicine Research with Cutting-Edge Mass Spectrometry Instruments

The Rapid Screening Research Center for Toxicology and Biomedicine (RSRCTB) at National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) officially announced the collaboration with Shimadzu Corporation (Shimadzu), the largest analytical and measuring instruments manufacturer in Japan on March 10th, 2023. NSYSU has established the first Satellite Laboratory in Taiwan, utilizing varied kinds of chemical analytical instruments manufactured by Shimadzu, aiming to demonstrate applications in advanced fields of science, such as emergency medicine, toxicology, pharmacy, forensic science, food safety, environmental and industrial chemistry.
NSYSU’s Senior Vice President, Chih-Wen Kuo, emphasized that the Satellite Laboratory was established to support the vision of the Joint Mass Spectrometry Laboratory, which was built in collaboration with Shimadzu Scientific Instruments (TAIWAN) in 2019. To develop comprehensive safety technology in Taiwan, Satellite Laboratory will expand applications of mass spectrometry analysis with instruments by Shimadzu, including instruments for Gas chromatography (GC), Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS), High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), High-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS), Ultraviolet-visible (UV/Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and related sample preparations. Shimadzu also aims to cultivate more talent in the field of chemical analytical technology by offering long-term scholarships for graduate students in NSYSU’s Department of Chemistry, in addition to providing laboratory instruments valued at over $NTD 10 million.

By providing NSYSU’s Satellite Laboratory with the most advanced mass spectrometry and optical emission analytical instruments, Shimadzu will play a significant role in the potential growth of the chemical analysis industry in Taiwan and will help cultivate related talent.
Jentaie Shiea, Director of RSRCTB at NSYSU indicated that the center has obtained more than 30 patents of ambient mass spectrometry techniques, enabling the inspection of trace chemical and biochemical elements since 2017. The research team aims at solving varied environmental, pharmaceutical, and daily issues. For example, the ambient mass spectrometry technique developed by Chi-Wei Lee, the Associate Professor of NSYSU’s Institute of Medical Science and Technology, also RSRCTB’s core faculty, has been applied in the rapid screening of toxic compounds. Without complicated sample preparation procedures, it takes less than one minute to do the screening. This technique thus effectively accelerated the medical treatment of intoxicated patients in the emergency room.
