Joining hands with TSMC, NSYSU will establish a new Institute of Innovative Semiconductor Manufacturing in August

2023-05-09

The National Sun Yat-Sen University (NSYSU) College of Semiconductor and Advanced Technology Research was grandly established in August 2022 and cooperated with seven large local companies in Kaohsiung. The College cultivates 120 master-level scientific and technological talents every year, which are required for semiconductor packaging and testing and precision electronic parts and components manufacturing industries to develop. After more than half a year of hard work, the College of Semiconductor and Advanced Technology Research of NSYSU has been approved by the Ministry of Education. It will establish the Institute of Innovative Semiconductor Manufacturing in August this year and will train 25 masters’ and 5 doctoral students every year. The initial cooperative enterprise is Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC).

NSYSU President Ying-Yao Cheng pointed out that the College of Semiconductor and Advanced Technology Research, in response to the development policy of the country's core areas, focuses on the development needs of Kaohsiung’s semiconductor packaging and testing and precision electronic parts and components manufacturing industries. The college cooperates with 7+1 international benchmarking companies and combines industry, government, and academic resources to cultivate scientific and technological talents. Hoping to help strengthen Taiwan's semiconductor and other related industries in the world's leading position.

I-Yu Huang, Dean of the NSYSU College of Semiconductor and Advanced Technology Research, said that he is very grateful for the affirmation of the Review Committee of the Ministry of Education and the resource injection of TSMC and the National Development Fund. The college was able to establish three research institutes in just one year, covering professional fields including wafer manufacturing in the middle reaches of the semiconductor industry chain, packaging and testing in the lower reaches of the semiconductor industry chain, and technologies related to the precision electronic parts and components manufacturing industry. It is estimated that the first phase of the 10-year plan will cultivate about 1,200 master’s and doctoral talent to join core industries such as semiconductors and electronic components.

The NSYSU College of Semiconductor and Advanced Technology Research emphasized that the master's class of the newly established Institute of Innovative Semiconductor Manufacturing adopts an innovative industry-academia cultivation mechanism of summer corporate internships for the first year of graduate school and two-year university professional development. (The doctoral class is planned to be four years.) The institute also provides a scholarship of a total of NTD 30,000 to 80,000 for the master’s degree for two years and a grant of NTD 360,000 per year for the doctorate program for up to four years. The summer corporate internship location for the first year of graduate school is planned to be held at TSMC's newcomer training center in Central Taiwan Science Park, giving students a rare opportunity to experience advanced semiconductor equipment and manufacturing processes before enrolling. A preliminary understanding of the semiconductor industry will be more conducive to future professional knowledge and the research of thesis development.
