The unveiling ceremony of NSYSU’s donor wall was hosted to honor the generous sponsorship of medical education

2024-02-13

To express gratitude and recognize the generosity of the public, alumni, and enterprises who have contributed to medical education, National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) has erected a donor wall in the lobby of the College of Medicine. Recently, the university hosted the “Donor Wall Unveiling Ceremony and Display of Clinical Skills Training Teaching Props.” The event was jointly presided over by Prof. Ying-Yao Cheng, President of NSYSU, Chung-hui Huang, President of NSYSU Alumni Association, and Shyh-Fang Liu, a member of the Legislative Yuan. The ceremony aimed to express appreciation to those who have made significant donations, fostering the development of future medical professionals and contributing to advancements in the medical field and social health welfare.

The NSYSU College of Medicine showcased the functionality of clinical skills training teaching props and manikins during the event. This included high-fidelity maternal simulators equipped with first aid supplies, diverse clinical skills training models, and laboratories for teaching pathological tissue anatomy. The simulated childbirth process left guests genuinely impressed with its authenticity. Moreover, this simulator offers students the opportunity to practice a wide range of regular and rare delivery situations, enhancing their hands-on experience.

President Ying-Yao Cheng highlighted that NSYSU, established in 1980, has diligently worked for 43 years, achieving excellence in academic research, talent development, and international outreach. Despite being a smaller-scale university, NSYSU is known for its strong focus on research. As the world experiences an aging population, there is a pressing need to nurture medical professionals and champion health equity, especially in Southern Taiwan. The establishment of the College of Medicine, supported by Shyh-Fang Liu, alumni, enterprises, and individuals from various backgrounds, exemplifies Taiwan's diverse and positive impact on healthcare.

Professor Ming-Lung Yu, the Senior Vice President and Dean of the College of Medicine at NSYSU, emphasized the significant progress made by the College within its first year since its establishment in the fall of 2022. Through the dedicated efforts of esteemed supporters and faculty members, the College has made remarkable strides in both teaching and research. Key infrastructure developments include the establishment of the Medical Education and Humanities Center, Core Facility Laboratory, and clinical skills demonstration classrooms. Furthermore, the Higher Education SPROUT Program's research center has generously supported NSYSU in founding the Center of Excellence for Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease (CEMAFLD), the only one of its kind in Taiwan. In recognition of its commitment to cutting-edge education and research, the Ministry of Education has approved the initiation of a new Department of Biomedical Science and Technology (EMI Program) and Ph.D. programs for the Institute of Precision Medicine and the Institute of BioPharmaceutical Sciences.

To foster communication within academic realms, acquire new knowledge, and strengthen international connections, NSYSU College of Medicine consistently organizes seminars, workshops, expert lectures, and interdisciplinary projects. These initiatives leverage integrated resources and involve various colleges across the university. Professor Yu extends special appreciation to enterprises and alumni for their multifaceted investments in medical education funds, laying a solid foundation for the college. Gratitude is also extended to medical institutions in Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Taitung, and Penghu for their partnership in remote healthcare projects.

The valuable contributions of doctors and professors from esteemed institutions such as Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Tainan Chi Mei Medical Center, Kaohsiung Medical University Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital, and Tzu Chi Hospital have been instrumental in providing selfless assistance in clinical skills and fundamental medical education. NSYSU expresses sincere appreciation to government agencies, including the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and the Kaohsiung City Government, for their robust support. It is through the dedicated efforts of individuals from diverse fields that the college successfully completes multiple significant projects each year.

“Beyond expressing gratitude to individuals from all walks of life, NSYSU remains committed to furthering its efforts in raising medical education funds.” President Ying-Yao Cheng emphasized that, despite having a well-established College of Medicine, there are still unfinished stages and opportunities to refine resources. Looking ahead, NSYSU is dedicated to advancing with guidance and assistance from our society. The university aims to unite scientific research capabilities, cultivate more medical professionals, optimize rural medical healthcare, and strive to achieve health equity.
