NSYSU Delegation Strengthens Global Partnerships with US Universities

In a bid to strengthen international ties and foster greater collaboration in education, National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) President Ying-Yao Cheng led a delegation of 14 academic and administrative officials to the United States. During their visit, they forged partnerships and deliberated on the details of cooperation with four prominent American universities: Case Western Reserve University, The University of Akron, Rutgers University, and Baruch College of the City University of New York. The focus of this collaboration spans across the fields of chemistry, polymers, materials science, engineering, and finance, aiming to provide students with increased opportunities to obtain prestigious master's degrees from renowned U.S. universities and engage in international exchanges.
NSYSU emphasized that this visit marks a significant milestone in establishing crucial partnerships with American universities, offering students educational opportunities. It is a tangible manifestation of its longstanding commitment to promoting international cooperation. Following the 3+2 bachelor-master model, NSYSU students can pursue two years of study at American universities after three years of undergraduate studies at NSYSU, thereby obtaining a bachelor's degree from NSYSU and a master's degree from American universities within a five-year timeframe.

In recent years, NSYSU has actively promoted international cooperation, symbolizing its commitment to education and academia. NSYSU was designated as a bilingual benchmark university by the Ministry of Education in 2021 and launched the first batch of English-taught undergraduate programs, with 11 departments participating, including all undergraduate programs in the College of Science and the College of Engineering. These English-taught programs expedite dual and accelerated degree cooperation with overseas universities, particularly in STEM fields, providing NSYSU students with opportunities and privileges to pursue further studies abroad at prestigious institutions. The recent trip to the United States to sign MOUs and agreements and discuss the execution of cooperation details aims to foster the cultivation of more internationally competitive talents.
NSYSU stated that Case Western Reserve University, located in Cleveland, Ohio, is a research-oriented private university. Both universities signed a 3+2 bachelor-master agreement for students in chemistry, biochemistry, and related disciplines, enabling them to pursue two years of study at Case Western Reserve University to obtain master's degrees after completing their three years of study at NSYSU. During this visit, discussions were also held with officials and professors in the fields of engineering, finance, and management to explore future cooperative opportunities. During the visit, a university-wide Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed to solidify the intentions of collaboration.
The University of Akron, known for its focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, particularly excels in polymer research. NSYSU's Department of Mechanical and Electro-Optical Engineering and the Department of Materials and Optoelectronic Science signed the 3+2 agreement in polymers with The University of Akron in 2022, and discussions during this visit aimed to explore further possibilities for in-depth exchanges.
During the visit to Rutgers University, a university-wide MOU was established to promote cooperation in all disciplines. The engineering faculties of both universities also signed a 3+2 agreement covering electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, computer science, and photonics. Discussions were also initiated on cooperation in chemistry to enhance academic exchanges.
Baruch College, located in Manhattan, New York, is renowned for its business school, with its financial engineering program ranking among the world's best. NSYSU and Baruch College signed a Statement of Shared Interest at the end of 2023 to establish a formal cooperative tie and commence arrangements for a summer study program in New York for students from the School of Banking and Finance. This visit deepened mutual understanding and confirmed Baruch College's advantages in geographical location and disciplinary expertise, providing NSYSU students with valuable international financial knowledge and exposure to the vibe of Wall Street. Both parties also discussed other possible cooperation projects, including student exchanges, short-term exchanges, and dual-degree programs.
