NSYSU established the new Institute of Integrated Circuit Design to cultivate high-tech talents
2024-10-15
National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) officially established the "Institute of Integrated Circuit Design" (IC Design Institute) in the 2024 academic year and held a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The IC Design Institute of NSYSU will focus on developing integrated circuit (IC) design and emphasizing internationalized teaching and research. Key research areas include underwater technology application chips, green energy system integration chip design, artificial intelligence, and encryption technology IC design. The courses will be conducted entirely in English, and graduates are expected to pursue careers primarily in the semiconductor and IC design industries.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony invited numerous experts, scholars, and industry leaders to participate and deliver remarks, including Chia-Hong Lin-Liao, Deputy Director-general of the Economic Development Bureau of the Kaohsiung City Government; Shiaw-Jen An, Director of the IC Verification Department of Realtek Semiconductor Corp.'s Communications Network Business Group; Shun-Hsiung Chen, Director of the Microcontroller Business Group R&D Department at Nuvoton Technology Corporation; Carol Y. H. Chang, Director of the Microcontroller Marketing Division at Nuvoton Technology Corporation; Chao-Wen Lu, Chairman of Jet Point Enterprise; and Shiao-Wei Kuo, Dean of the College of Engineering at NSYSU. They emphasized the importance of IC design and expected that the IC Design Institute would become a vital bridge for industry-academia collaboration, jointly driving technological advancement and talent cultivation.
NSYSU President Chih-Peng Li pointed out that the establishment of the IC Design Institute is not only a significant milestone for NSYSU but also a major contribution to Taiwan's high-tech industry. Through collaboration among industry, academia, and research, the institute hopes to promote the practical application of technology and the development of technological innovation while also striving to cultivate the next generation of technology leaders. Tong-Yu Hsieh, Chair of the Institute of Integrated Circuit Design of NSYSU, stated that IC design is one of the critical developments in modern technology, playing an indispensable role in various fields, including consumer electronics, communication equipment, and industrial applications. With the rapid development of science and technology, the needs and challenges of IC design are increasing daily. The Institute of Integrated Circuit Design (IC Design Institute) was established to meet these challenges and cultivate high-quality professionals. In addition, with internationalization receiving increasing attention year by year, IC Design Institute's lecture courses are all taught in English, which can not only enhance students' English professional abilities but also attract international students to study.
Moreover, the IC Design Institute has assembled professional faculty whose fruitful research results highlight their contribution and development in technology research. The Economic Development Bureau of the Kaohsiung City Government stated that the advancement of AI technology not only changes global industrial development but also drives comprehensive application services in daily life. The semiconductor industry plays a crucial role in the AI transformation, and the IC design discipline has become an unstoppable and essential trend. As TSMC strengthens its layout of advanced manufacturing processes and builds a 2-nanometer plant in Kaohsiung, relevant technology manufacturers have successively entered and expanded their investments. The city government is actively beckoning the upstream IC design industries to complete the industrial chain, from IC design companies like ASPEED Technology, ELAN Microelectronics, and Skymizer to packaging and testing firms like ASE Group, creating a complete semiconductor industry ecosystem with upstream, midstream, and downstream technologies. The establishment of the "Institute of Integrated Circuit Design" of NSYSU will not only strengthen talent cultivation in the semiconductor field and attract more outstanding talents to Kaohsiung but also help develop localized applications and services, bringing strong momentum to Kaohsiung's economic transformation.
