Based on the "Top Universities in Taiwan" released by Global Views Monthly in 2024, National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) maintains its position among the top 5 public universities in Taiwan for three consecutive years, alongside National Taiwan University (NTU), National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYMCTU), and National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), and ranks first among the "medium to large-sized universities" (student enrollments ranging between 10,000 and 14,999). NSYSU also take lead at the indicator of "average amount of self-generated subsidies for students" from the "Social Prestige" dimension.
According to the latest survey by Global Views Monthly, NSYSU ranks first among "medium to large-sized universities," followed by National Central University (NCU), National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST), National Taipei University of Technology (NTUT), and National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (NYUST). With a student population of 10,346, NSYSU just crosses the threshold and is classified as one of the "medium to large-sized universities." Despite its relatively small student population considered as a disadvantage, NSYSU still emerges as the top university in this category. According to Global Views Monthly, NSYSU’s success is primarily due to its efforts in securing several major national projects in recent years, such as establishing the College of Semiconductor and Advanced Technology Research, the School of Medicine, and the School of Banking and Finance. These establishments have significantly expanded the NSYSU's resources and scale, enabling the University to be in the lead of those national universities with names starting with "Chung," and achieve the top fifth among both comprehensive and public universities, just after NTU, NCKU, NYMCTU, and NTHU. In addition to ranking the first among the "medium to large-sized universities", NSYSU also ranks the second only to NCKU in the "southern universities" category from the regional aspect. It also ranks among the top 10 in both the general university ranking and the high-funded universities category from the overall funding scale aspect.
When analyzing the rankings based on 45 specific indicators in 6 major dimensions, NSYSU ranks the third in the "Social Prestige" dimension, and among the 11 indicators of this dimension, NSYSU ranks the first in the indicator of "average amount of self-generated subsidies for students," demonstrating its dedication to supporting disadvantage students. NSYSU also ranks among the top 10 in other four dimensions, including "Academic Achievement," "Teaching Performance," "Internationalization," and "Industry-Academia Collaboration." Moreover, NSYSU also ranks among the top 10 universities nationwide, based on the "Overall Competitiveness Peer Evaluation" from 241 questionnaires completed by university presidents and senior vice presidents of 101 universities across Taiwan.
NSYSU stated that its recent achievements have been widely acknowledged, including being one of only four Key Universities for Bilingual Campus in Taiwan at the first batch, as well as gaining approval from the Ministry of Education to establish the School of Medicine, the College of Medicine, and the College of Semiconductor and Advanced Technology Research. Furthermore, over two years ago, NSYSU established Taiwan's first School of Banking and Finance that offers EMI courses. NSYSU extended special thanks to its important research partners, including Kaohsiung Medical University, as well as NCKU, National Chung Hsing University (NCHU), and National Chung Cheng University (CCU) of Taiwan Comprehensive University System (TCUS).
Global Views Monthly's "Top Universities in Taiwan" has been conducted and published since 2016, providing evaluations of universities throughout Taiwan. After nine years, it has established itself as a significant benchmark for evaluating higher education institutions in Taiwan. In addition to the existing rankings "Comprehensive/Humanities and Social Sciences/Medical Sciences," "Public/Private," and "General/Technical Vocational," this year 4 new regional categories have been introduced: Northern, Central, Southern, Eastern and Outlying Islands. In addition to the regional aspect, Global Views Monthly also introduced 5 new categories in terms of student enrollments: "small-sized" (less than 5,000 students), "small to medium-sized" (5,000 to 6,999 students), "medium-sized" (7,000 to 9,999 students), "medium to large-sized" (10,000 to 14,999 students), and "large-sized" (more than 15,000 students), due to the concerns from some northern region universities that rankings did not account for student numbers, which could be unfair to smaller institutions. Each category has its own evaluations and rankings to ensure more detailed and fair results.
