NSYSU hosts Taiwan-UK University Consortium's inaugural conference on net zero solutions and English language collaboration
2024-11-12
The Taiwan-UK University Consortium (TUKUC) organized its first-ever conference at National Sun Yat-sen University's (NSYSU) 360 University House, attracting top academics, administrators, and policymakers. The conference welcomed 54 participants, including 19 distinguished delegates from UK universities, the British Office in Taipei, and the British Council, alongside 35 representatives from Taiwanese universities. The conference focused on two main themes: net zero and English language education, facilitating in-depth discussions and exchanges. Additionally, bilateral international collaboration grant programs were introduced to promote future cooperation opportunities between the two sides.
TUKUC was established in November 2023 through a partnership between the British Council and Taiwan's Ministry of Education. This Consortium brings together eight leading universities from Taiwan and the UK with a shared vision of transcending academic disciplines and cultures to foster bilateral cooperation and mobility. Founding members include the University of Edinburgh, Newcastle University, University of Liverpool, University of the West of Scotland, National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University, National Taiwan Normal University, and National Sun Yat-sen University.
The conference's opening ceremony featured remarks from NSYSU President Chih-Peng Li, Representative John Dennis of the British Office in Taipei, Director Taiwan Susan Milner of the British Council, and President Cheng-Chih Wu of National Taiwan Normal University and also Chairperson of the Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan (FICHET), underscoring the high-level support for this growing transnational partnership. Key facilitators of the conference included Director Milner, Dr. Yvonne Foley of the TUKUC Secretariat from the University of Edinburgh, and NSYSU Vice President for International Affairs Dr. Ming-Hsuan Lee.
The conference focused on two main themes - net zero and English language education - including presentations, matchmaking sessions, and in-depth discussions. Scholars presented research, explored collaborative opportunities in related fields, and exchanged ideas and strategies for interdisciplinary research and projects. Additionally, representatives from funding agencies, including the British Office in Taipei and Taiwan's National Science and Technology Council, introduced a variety of funding avenues for research and academic exchange. Through the matchmaking session, potential partners were able to have extensive discussions to draw up action plans for joint research and projects.
The conference achieved several critical milestones for fostering research and academic mobility between Taiwan and the UK. In Research Collaborations, working groups were formed within the English Language theme, and researchers in Net Zero were paired with future partners for collaborative research and student exchange. In mobility programs, initiatives to support faculty and student exchange programs, including joint PhD programs, were discussed as part of an ongoing commitment to mobility. For support of early-career scholars, the Consortium plans to introduce workshops at its next conference in 2025, and focuses on developing research proposals, writing for publication, and enhancing international collaboration skills for emerging scholars. Beyond the funding agencies represented at the conference, the Consortium intends to seek additional resources, such as Taiwan's Ministry of Education and the UK's Royal Society, to support future collaboration.
To prepare for future conferences and collaborative activities, the Consortium will subsequently appoint and form theme leads and scientific committees to oversee and expand involvement across Consortium institutions. TUKUC looks forward to its next conference in the UK in 2025, building on this foundational event to further strengthen ties and accelerate impactful research and academic exchange.
