NSYSU signs an MOU with the University of Hawaii at Manoa to deepen international educational collaboration

Jhu-Chun Yang, who has extensive experience executing environmental projects and promoting environmental education in Taiwan, engaged in international exchanges and shared her expertise with primary, middle, and high school teachers in Hawaii. She provided teachers with suggestions and assistance in curriculum design, aiming to work with Hawaii's education community to develop diversified marine activities and further promote the practice of environmental education in the future.

"Teachers and Researchers Advancing Integrated Lessons in STEM" leverages the marine microplastic distribution and pollution research project to promote STEM education by guiding students in the exploration of biodegradable materials. Using self-made 3D-printed biomimetic lures for field fishing, students analyze the microplastic content in the fish they catch, tracing potential pollution sources. The research team has gathered data in Hawaiian waters and expanded to American Samoa. Jhu-Chun Yang actively participates in this project, collaborating with Professor Pauline Chinn to analyze data collected in Hawaii and American Samoa.

The Institute of Education and the International Graduate Program of Education and Human Development at National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Hawaii at Manoa. This partnership aims to facilitate future teaching and academic cooperation, including the joint offering of courses for students from both institutions. This initiative will enhance opportunities for graduate students to engage in cross-border learning and promote the capacity for international collaboration.

The Institute of Education at NSYSU maintains frequent exchanges with the University of Hawaii at Manoa. During the "2022 Taiwan Educational Research Association Academic Conference" hosted by NSYSU, Professor Pauline Chinn from the University of Hawaii at Manoa was invited to present online on the topic: "COVID-19, the Latest Hawaiian Epidemic: The Impact of Place-based, Culturally Relevant COVID-19 Curriculum on Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Students." Additionally, Paichi Pat Shein, Chair of NSYSU's Institute of Education, received a grant from the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) to conduct a "Cross-cultural Comparative Study on Placed-based Indigenous Education for Sustainable Development" in the United States. Recently, NSYSU doctoral student Jhu-Chun Yang was awarded a scholarship under the NSTC's "Graduate Students Study Abroad Program" to become a visiting scholar in the United States. She joined the University of Hawaii at Manoa's STEM integration initiative, "Teachers and Researchers Advancing Integrated Lessons in STEM," supported by funding from the United States National Research Council (NRC), specifically focusing on the marine microplastic distribution and pollution research project. The team plans to co-publish their findings in academic journals, further expanding the capacity for international collaborative research.

Chair Paichi Pat Shein of NSYSU's Institute of Education mentioned that signing this MOU with the University of Hawaii at Manoa will deepen academic and educational exchanges between the two institutions. The two universities plan to jointly offer courses next year, providing an opportunity for students from the University of Hawaii to engage in research at NSYSU, and students from NSYSU will also be able to study at the University of Hawaii. This collaboration will promote academic interactions between the two institutions, fostering more in-depth international exchanges. It will also substantially enhance students' global perspectives and mobility, cultivating them into bilingual professionals with a worldview.
