Taiwan-Japan academic collaboration takes a major step forward! Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the College of Science at National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) and the Graduate School of Science at Osaka University officially signed a double PhD degree agreement at NSYSU. The collaboration aims to cultivate elite global talents by offering opportunities for students to earn double PhD degrees. Each academic year, both universities will provide the opportunity for five students to participate in the dual-degree program. After completing coursework and research collaborations at both institutions, and fulfilling graduation requirements, students can obtain PhD degrees from NSYSU and Osaka University in as little as three years.
Dean Jyh-Tsung Lee of NSYSU's College of Science highlighted that this agreement marks a significant milestone in the academic and research partnership between the two universities, offering students a valuable opportunity to earn double degrees and access broader academic resources. PhD students from all departments at NSYSU's College of Science will be eligible to apply for the double degree program with Osaka University. Students will spend one year at NSYSU, another year at Osaka University, and then return to NSYSU for their final year. Upon meeting all credit and dissertation requirements, students can earn double PhD degrees from NSYSU and Osaka University within three years. The College of Science at NSYSU and the Graduate School of Science at Osaka University will provide five positions each academic year, broadening doctoral talents' international research horizons.
NSYSU stated that Osaka University, one of Japan's top research universities and the largest national university in the country, ranks among the top 100 universities globally in QS rankings. NSYSU and Osaka University have established solid collaborations in various disciplines over the years. The signing delegation from Osaka University, led by Dean Tadashi Kondo of the Graduate School of Science, included Associate Dean and Director of the International College, Takashi Kubo; Associate Dean Akio Fujiwara; Professor Mikito Koshino from the Department of Physics; Professor Yuki Kondo from the Department of Biological Sciences; and Associate Professor Yuri Kamon from the Center for International Affairs. The double PhD degree agreement opens a new chapter in Taiwan-Japan academic cooperation.
During the signing ceremony, both deans introduced the history and development of their respective colleges of science. Faculty members from various departments also presented their research areas and departmental highlights, laying the groundwork for mutual understanding and future collaboration. Dean Jyh-Tsung Lee of NSYSU's College of Science expressed high hopes for the partnership, stating, "Establishing a double PhD program with a top-tier university like Osaka will undoubtedly enhance NSYSU's academic influence, offering invaluable learning and research opportunities for students while promoting closer ties between the two institutions." He looks forward to more resource sharing and in-depth cooperation between Taiwan and Japan in the future. Dean Tadashi Kondo of the Graduate School of Science at Osaka University emphasized the significance of this partnership, noting that he assumed office in the spring of 2024 and this visit marks his first visit to Taiwan. He highlighted that the Graduate School of Science at Osaka University has signed 27 double degree agreements worldwide, and this was the first signing ceremony he attended as dean. He looks forward to more collaborative opportunities in academic research between the two universities.
Ming-Hsuan Lee, Vice President for International Affairs at NSYSU, warmly welcomed the Osaka delegation and expressed hope that the double PhD collaboration's impact would extend to more departments. She envisioned providing students from various fields with more opportunities for global collaboration, thereby deepening higher education partnerships and enhancing international academic competitiveness.
