To promote academic excellence and internationalization, and to showcase Taiwan’s higher education strengths to the world, National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) President Chih-Peng Li led an administrative and academic delegation to the United States from September 16 to 24. The visit spanned New York, Silicon Valley, and Los Angeles, aiming to recruit global talent, engage alumni communities, and reaffirm NSYSU’s commitment to becoming a world-class university.
President Li highlighted NSYSU’s efforts to build a bilingual and multicultural campus that attracts outstanding scholars and young researchers from Taiwan and abroad. “We want the world to see Taiwan’s strong higher education environment and to let international talent experience both the exceptional academic opportunities and the unique lifestyle offered by NSYSU’s seaside campus.”
During the visit, Vice President for Research and Development Tsung-Hsien Lin highlighted NSYSU’s achievements in interdisciplinary research, international collaboration, and bilingual education, while introducing the university’s extensive research resources and development strategies. Participants remarked that NSYSU’s distinctive location—nestled between mountains and the sea in Sizihwan—perfectly complements its academic strengths, leaving a lasting impression.
In addition to talent recruitment, the trip also featured alumni gatherings in the three cities. The events drew enthusiastic participation, with alumni expressing gratitude for the university’s efforts to connect with them face-to-face across the ocean. Many pledged to continue supporting their alma mater through concrete actions, praising NSYSU’s warmth and dedication.
Pei-Fen Chen, Director of the Center for Alumni Services and Social Engagement, emphasized that alumni achievements across diverse fields are among NSYSU’s most valuable assets. “Through in-person visits and direct interaction, we strengthen emotional connections with our overseas alumni and reinforce a shared sense of belonging, laying a solid foundation for the University’s ongoing international development,” she said.
The delegation also visited Startup Island Taiwan, a national innovation brand established in Silicon Valley by Taiwan’s National Development Council, to learn about the government’s initiatives in supporting startups in connecting with venture capitalists and resources. The discussions explored future collaboration opportunities with NSYSU’s innovation and incubation units, demonstrating the University’s forward-looking approach to international engagement and industry-academia cooperation.
President Li concluded that NSYSU will continue to deepen its global talent networks, promote international academic-industry collaboration, and cultivate professionals with both global vision and local commitment. “We will advance steadily toward our goal of becoming a world-class university and demonstrate the vitality and influence of Taiwan’s higher education through concrete actions,” he affirmed.
President Li also extended heartfelt thanks to John Y. Lin, Director of the Education Division at TECO New York; David Dong, Director of the Education Division, and Hong-Wei Yen, Director of the Science and Technology Division at TECO San Francisco; as well as Cheng-Han Lee, Director of the Education Division at TECO Los Angeles. Their guidance and support played a key role in ensuring the success of the visit.
