NSYSU Faculty and Students Collaborate with the University of Washington to Advance Educational Justice

2025-10-07

(Provided by International Graduate Program of Education and Human Development) This summer, faculty and graduate students from National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) visited the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle to participate in an intensive teacher training program and academic exchange, as part of NSYSU’s “Higher Education Sprout Project for Just Transition,” now in its second year.

Led by Distinguished Professor Dr. Hsueh-Hua Chuang, Chair of the International Graduate Program of Education and Human Development, the delegation included Assistant Professor Dr. Dale Albanese and Assistant Professor Dr. Yu-Hui Chang from the Center for Teacher Education, along with eight master’s and doctoral students. The group engaged in workshops and courses focused on inclusive teaching design in multilingual and multicultural classrooms.

UW’s College of Education is globally recognized for its leadership in multilingual education and teacher preparation. NSYSU participants joined in-service American teachers in exploring strategies for differentiated instruction, cross-linguistic assessment, and the integration of AI tools to support vulnerable student groups.

A highlight of the visit was a workshop led by UW’s Boeing Professor of Teacher Education, Dr. Betina Hsieh, which bridged theory and practice in educational justice. The workshop encouraged participants to reflect on classroom applications in both Taiwan and the U.S., and to develop multimodal teaching strategies that foster cultural identity, equity, and inclusion.

The exchange also included academic sharing sessions with UW graduate students, where both sides presented their research interests and discussed future collaboration opportunities. NSYSU postdoctoral researcher Dr. Ju-Hui Wei and doctoral student Liang-Chen Su expressed optimism about continued partnership, noting the diversity of educational topics explored.

NSYSU is committed to expanding its global engagement and fostering innovative and inclusive education through international collaboration with leading institutions worldwide.
