2026-07-06
To deepen international cooperation and strengthen teaching and research capacity, National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) continues to advance global talent recruitment and cross-border collaboration, actively attracting top scholars worldwide. Recently, NSYSU appointed Ikuro Abe (University of Toyama, Japan), JJ Po-An Hsieh (Georgia State University, USA), and reappointed Paul J. Hu (University of Utah, USA) as Yushan Fellows Visiting Chair Professors. The three professors' research expertise spans natural product biosynthesis and natural product chemistry, artificial intelligence (AI) and information technology innovation, and information technology in healthcare and digital transformation. Through the Yushan Fellow Program, NSYSU aims to strengthen international research capacity, enhance global visibility, and cultivate professional talent.
NSYSU President Chih-Peng Li emphasized that the university has been continuously building international talent linkages in recent years, establishing long-term partnerships with research institutions in Europe, the United States, Japan, and other regions through initiatives such as the Yushan Fellow Program, dual-degree programs, and transnational academic networks. Li further noted that, amid intensifying global research competition and rapid industrial transformation, higher education institutions must not only cultivate talent but also establish stable platforms for international collaboration. The appointment and reappointment of these three distinguished Yushan Fellows will not only enhance research and teaching capacity but also enable students and young scholars to engage with cutting-edge global issues, strengthening interdisciplinary and cross-cultural research competencies.
Newly appointed Yushan Fellow Ikuro Abe is currently a Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo and a Professor at the Institute of Natural Medicine, University of Toyama, Japan. He has long specialized in natural product biosynthesis, enzyme catalysis, synthetic biology, and natural product chemistry. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a recipient of the Medal with Purple Ribbon from the Cabinet Office of the Japanese Government, and he also serves on the editorial boards of several international journals. Ikuro Abe will assist NSYSU's Department of Marine Biotechnology and Resources in planning and offering specialized courses and establishing a research platform for marine natural products and biotechnology applications. He will jointly cultivate doctoral research talent and plans to build collaborative networks with the University of Tokyo and research institutions in Europe and the United States, accelerating industry–academia cooperation and technology transfer in marine biotechnology research. Ikuro Abe expressed his great pleasure and honor to join NSYSU as a Yushan Fellow. Although he has only been there for a short time, he has already experienced the kindness, warmth, and strong academic spirit of the university. He looks forward to contributing to research and education at NSYSU and to building fruitful collaborations with colleagues and students.
Another newly appointed Yushan Fellow, JJ Po-An Hsieh, is a Professor in the Department of Computer Information Systems at Georgia State University, USA, with research expertise in AI, digital innovation, and IT governance. He has published numerous papers in top-tier international journals, is recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher, has received honors such as the Association for Information Systems (AIS) Mid-Career Award, and serves as an editor for premier journals. Hsieh will collaborate with the Sustainable Intelligent Electronic Commerce Research Center at NSYSU to study AI applications on digital influencers, healthcare, elderly well-being, e-mentoring platforms, and organizational transformation. He will also assist faculty members and doctoral students in premier outlet submissions, thereby strengthening research capacity in information management and intelligent e-commerce. Hsieh pointed out that it is his honor to join the Sustainable Intelligent Electronic Commerce Research Center at NSYSU. He looks forward to working with outstanding faculty and students on cutting-edge topics in AI-enabled digital innovation, organizational transformation, and societal impacts.
Paul J. Hu, a reappointed Yushan Fellow, is the E.R. Dumke Jr. Presidential Endowed Chair Professor in the Department of Operations and Information Systems at the University of Utah, USA. His research focuses on information technology in healthcare, artificial intelligence, explainable business analytics, electronic commerce and digital transformation, and technology and knowledge management in organizations. Hu has been collaborating with many faculty members in NSYSU's Department of Information Management and the Sustainable Intelligent Electronic Commerce Research Center, with ongoing projects in several areas that include data-driven analytics for online platforms, digital customer services, AI-empowered clinical decision-making, NFT transactions, and generative/agentic AI applications. He has also contributed to doctoral students' cultivation, international research collaborations, and publications in top academic journals. In the future, Hu will further deepen the collaborative partnerships and support NSYSU in elevating its international visibility and impact in the field of information management. Joining NSYSU as a Yushan Fellow, Hu is truly blessed to have the opportunity to collaborate with many talented faculty members in exciting projects and would like to express his sincere gratitude to NSYSU and the Sustainable Intelligent Electronic Commerce Research Center for the great support that makes the partnerships possible.
Tsung-Hsien Lin, Vice President for Research and Development at NSYSU, pointed out that the Yushan Fellow Program is not only about inviting top international scholars to the university for exchanges, but also a crucial strategy for deepening international scientific research collaboration and academic development. The newly appointed and reappointed Yushan Fellows have international influence and closely align with NSYSU's research development direction. In the future, NSYSU will continue to integrate its internal research capabilities, deepen long-term collaboration with international scholars, and further enhance the university's research strength.
